Rogério Marinho defends open voting in the Senate race

Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), a likely candidate for Senate President, argues that right-wing lawmakers should disclose their votes in the February election. The goal is to prevent senators elected under the banner of fighting the STF from supporting Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP). The election could split parties such as União Brasil and PP.

Senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), a likely candidate for the Presidency of the Senate, said that he will defend that the parliamentarians of the right divulge the vote in the dispute for the command of the House, which will occur in February, in the resumption of legislative work. The statement was given in an interview with Folha de S.Paulo, in which Marinho openly criticized the re-election of the current president, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP).

The name of Marinho, who coordinated the presidential campaign of Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), gained strength as the main opponent to the re-election of Alcolumbre with the overwhelming victory of the PL in the state urns. The party has elected 19 senators and will have a seat of 29 in the Senate, one of the largest in the country’s democratic history.

Pressure for transparency in voting

“It is difficult to justify the vote in Alcolumbre in public,” said Marinho. For the senator, the exposure of the votes is a way of embarrassing colleagues who can support the current president of the House, especially those elected with confrontational speech to the Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF).

After the turn of President Lula (PT) in the second round, Alcolumbre began to articulate the support of the center parties to remain in charge of the Casa Alta. The management of the Amapá senator is criticized by the right, mainly for shielding the ministers of the STF, targets of impeachment requests in the Federal Senate.

Strategy against STF shielding

With the exposure of the votes, Marinho aims to prevent senators elected with the flag of combating the excesses of the STF from going to support the current president of the House. The strategy seeks to align the campaign discourse with parliamentary practice, creating a public embarrassment for those who vote in Alcolumbre.

In addition to the votes of the PL, the opposition senator counts on the support of the parliamentarians of the right and the center-right to achieve the necessary majority to be elected: 41 votes of the 81 senators. The dispute may divide the bench of some parties, among them the União Brasil and the PP, which form the federation União Progressista.

Division into federation União Progressista

The management of the federation announced support for the re-election of Alcolumbre, but members of the PP have already positioned themselves against it. Senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MS) still intends to enter the contest for the Presidency of the Senate in February, which may further fragment the votes of the center-right.

The scenario is one of uncertainty: if Tereza Cristina formalizes her candidacy, the opposition to Alcolumbre could split between two names, weakening the chance of defeating the current president. On the other hand, pressure for open voting may force an early definition of undecided.

What's at stake

The Senate Presidency controls the voting schedule, including requests for impeachment of STF ministers and projects of government interest. To the right, electing Marinho would mean paving the way to address these demands; to the center, maintaining Alcolumbre guarantees institutional stability.

The outcome of the dispute will have a direct impact on the relationship between the Powers and on the progress of economic and social patterns. The source did not detail the exact timing of the joints, but the election is scheduled for early February, shortly after the inauguration of the new senators.

Next steps

Until then, Marinho must intensify the campaign for open voting, seeking public adhesions of senators. The pressure on MPs from the PP and União Brasil tends to grow, especially with the possibility of Tereza Cristina launching her own candidacy.

The Boca no Trombone Portal will continue to monitor the unfolding of this dispute and will bring new information once it is confirmed. Keep an eye on our updates.
