Trump Suspends Sanctions Against Russia's Partners

Donald Trump suspended sanctions that would tax up to 100% of products from countries buying Russian oil. The measure, approved by Congress a month ago, aimed to pressure Moscow into negotiating an end to the war. The retreat generated internal criticism and from Ukraine.

The president of Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, has lifted the economic sanctions that were planned to take effect against Russia’s trading partners. The decision was published in a decree less than 48 hours before the start of the collection of tariffs, which could reach 100% on products imported from five countries that most buy Russian gas or crude oil.

In the document, Trump stated that the suspension is in the interest of the Estados Unidos, but did not detail what that interest would be. The measure had been approved a month ago by the US Congress, where the Republican Party, of the president himself, has a majority.

Last minute retreat generates criticism

The change of position prompted immediate reactions. U.S. lawmakers criticized the decision, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the suspension a reward for Vladimir Putin. The setback also increased tensions between Washington and Kiev, an ally of the Estados Unidos in the conflict.

China and India, two of Russia’s top commodity buyers, had already expressed concern about the sanctions. The rule would apply to any country that, from the effective date, acquires oil or gas from Russia. The original intention was to increase economic pressure on Moscow to force the Kremlin to negotiate an end to the war against Ukraine, which began in early 2022.

Internal pressure and inflation up

The increased cost of living on the Estados Unidos may be behind the suspension of the sanctions. Since the start of the war in Iran in February, the value of diesel has risen by 68% in the country. This increase increased freight and was passed on to consumers, raising prices for food and other products.

In September, US inflation reached 3.7% compared to the same month of 2025. Surveys indicate that the rejection of the Trump administration has reached the highest level since the election, driven by voters unhappy with the most expensive prices. On November 3, the elections for the US Congress take place, and the economy should be a central theme.

Agreement with Putin to release diesel

Last week, Trump announced an agreement with Vladimir Putin to release diesel from Russia into the international market. The measure may ease pressure on fuel prices in the Estados Unidos, but it runs counter to Russia’s economic isolation strategy advocated by Western allies.

The suspension of sanctions and the agreement with Putin indicate a shift in US foreign policy towards the conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine remains dependent on Western support to confront the Russian invasion, and Trump’s decision could redefine the balance of forces in the region.

The Boca no Trombone Portal will continue to monitor the unfolding of this decision and its impacts on the global economy and geopolitics.
