Camber approves change to include all religions in "Som na Praça"
Ponta Grossa Chamber approves, in first discussion, project that expands "Som na Praça" to include music from different religions

The Câmara Municipal de Ponta Grossa approved, in the first discussion, on Wednesday (4), a proposal that aims to expand religious diversity in the project “Som na Praça”. The Bill No. 295/2026, presented by the councilor Guilherme Mazer (PT), modifies the municipal legislation to allow the participation of musical manifestations of different religions, without restricting the programming to Christian music.
The initiative amends Law No. 15,986, responsible for the creation of “Sleep in the Square”. In the original draft, the legislation exclusively recognized Christian music as a cultural manifestation contemplated by the project, including religious hymns, gospel songs, sacred music, and other styles related to the principles and values of Christianity.
With the proposed change, the concept will be broadened to encompass religious music in general, regardless of belief, denomination or tradition of origin.
Project seeks to expand religious diversity
By the new text, religious songs are considered compositions and interpretations that express beliefs, manifestations of faith, worship or spiritual feelings.
The definition also contemplates musical productions related to the sacred, developed by religious organizations of different matrices and traditions.
The objective is to ensure that the cultural project has a more comprehensive character, allowing the participation of different religious communities present in Ponta Grossa.
According to the councilor Guilherme Mazer, the amendment is necessary so that the legislation follows the diversity of beliefs existing in the municipality, preventing cultural manifestations of other religions from being outside the initiative.
“It is important to emphasize that this proposal is guided by the principle of pluralism and diversity, ensuring that any musical manifestation linked to the sacred is contemplated, regardless of its original matrix, denomination or tradition of faith,” the parliamentarian said.
Proposal still needs to move forward in the House
The approval in first discussion represents a stage of the legislative process. The text still needs to go through the other phases planned before a possible sanction and entry into force.
If it is transformed into a law, the amendment will allow “Som na Praça” to officially recognize musical manifestations of different religious traditions, expanding the possibilities of participation and valuing the cultural and religious diversity of Ponta Grossa.
