Detran-PR reinforces requirement of toxicological exam to obtain CNH for car and motorcycle
Candidates for first CNH in categories A and B must take a toxicological exam in Paraná. See how the new requirement works.

Who wants to take the first National License (CNH) to drive cars or motorcycles on the Paraná needs to meet a new requirement in the permitting process. Since June 2026, candidates in categories A, intended for motorcycles, and B, aimed at automobiles, must perform toxicological examination and present a negative result.
The measure is applied by the Transit Department of Paraná (Detran-PR) in compliance with federal legislation incorporated into the Brazilian Transit Code (CTB). Until then, the examination was best known for being part of the periodic requirements applied to drivers of categories C, D and E.
Test identifies drug use in recent months
The toxicological examination uses hair or hair samples and can point to the use of certain psychoactive substances in a detection window that can vary between 90 and 180 days, depending on the material used in the collection.
Among the substances investigated are cocaine and derivatives, crack, cannabis-associated cannabinoids, amphetamines, methamphetamines, ecstasy and opiates.
According to the proposed legislation, the requirement expands the prevention mechanisms before the candidate is allowed to drive. Recurrent use of certain drugs can interfere with important driving functions, such as attention, judgment, reflexes, and reaction time.
The rule also seeks to reinforce the educational character of the training process for new drivers and motorcyclists, highlighting the responsibility necessary to circulate in traffic.
Where to do the Toxicological Test
The candidate must bear the cost of the test and perform the procedure in a laboratory accredited by the National Secretariat of Traffic (Senatran).
Collection can be done from hair or body hair. After the laboratory analysis, the result is linked to the permitting process.
Common medications used in everyday life, such as painkillers, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, are not part of the substances normally researched by the test.
Already certain controlled drugs may appear in the analysis, especially in situations involving use without a valid medical prescription or outside the legal conditions provided for.
Positive result prevents advancement in the qualification
If the test is positive for any of the substances achieved by the rule, the candidate will not normally be able to complete the process until the situation is regularized.
To proceed with obtaining the NHC, it will be necessary to subsequently present a new examination with a negative result, observing the requirements foreseen for the procedure.
Toxicological is one of the steps to take the NHC
The completion of the test does not replace the other phases necessary to win the first qualification.
The candidate still needs to complete procedures such as biometric registration, psychological evaluation, physical and mental fitness exam, theoretical training and practical classes, in addition to the tests provided in the process.
The toxicological examination takes place parallel to the other steps and begins to function as one of the necessary requirements for the release of the first NHC in categories A and B in the Paraná.
