Estados Unidos Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview with NBC that he was "open to a meeting with Iran at the UN", although he stressed that there was nothing scheduled. The statement comes amidst the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where delegations from the two countries are present. The speech signals a possible resumption of dialogue after months of hostilities.
On the Iranian side, a senior official told Reuters on Tuesday that the delegation that traveled to the General Assembly has full authority to resume diplomatic relations with the Estados Unidos. The source, who spoke anonymously, did not detail how this could happen.
Opening for dialogue in New York
According to the Iranian source, the country could reopen the Strait of Hormuz in seven days if the Estados Unidos relieves military pressure and suspends the blockade on Iranian ports. The statement came after Iran announced a “restricted area” in the strait in response to attacks on oil tankers.
This week, Iran handed the United States, through mediators, a new proposal for a deal to end hostilities between the two countries. The Iranian official also said there was no anticipated meeting between the country’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, who left Tehran for New York on Tuesday morning, with the US president, Donald Trump.
Tension and threats of escalation
On Sunday, Iran said it had received information that the Estados Unidos would be preparing to resume bombings against Iran and threatened to retaliate “without any limitation” against US targets on the Oriente Médio if that happens. The warning came from the Iranian regime’s Central Military Command after U.S. media reported in recent days that the Trump administration was preparing for a further escalation against Iran in the war the two countries have been fighting for more than six months.
Tehran said the possible further escalation would be done "with the green light from some countries" of the Oriente Médio, and said those nations involved in the US strikes would be considered part of the conflict and "should not expect containment from the Iranian Forças Armadas".
Pending proposals and decisions
