President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Friday that he intends to accelerate Brazil’s economic growth and transform the country into a developed nation in the next four years. The statement was made during a meeting of the National Council of Energy Policy (CNPE), in which the head of the Executive highlighted the Brazilian potential to attract investment and expand job generation.

According to Lula, Brazil meets favorable conditions to reach a new level of development, mainly by the availability of renewable sources of energy, strategic minerals and reserves of rare earths, resources considered fundamental for different sectors of the world economy.

“In just four years, I want to take Brazil out of the developing country stage and put it in the developed country stage,” he said.

Clean energy and new investments

During the meeting, Lula advocated that the country take advantage of its natural advantages to conquer space in the international market. Among the priorities mentioned are the energy transition, the strengthening of the industry and the attraction of technology companies.

One of the sectors highlighted was data centers, structures used to store and process large volumes of digital information. The president said that the government intends to stimulate the installation of these enterprises, provided that measures are adopted to avoid impacts on the supply of energy to the population.

“Whoever comes to invest builds his own energy. It will not be the energy of the people that will be used for data centers,” he said.

Lula also mentioned the advances in international discussions on climate change and the transition of fossil fuels, highlighting Brazilian prominence in negotiations related to environmental preservation.

Relationship with Congress

The president assessed that the results achieved by the government also depend on the ability to negotiate with the Congresso Nacional.

Even without a parliamentary majority, Lula said his administration was able to approve important measures through dialogue with deputies and senators.

According to him, the political articulation will continue to be fundamental to enable projects considered strategic for the growth of the country.

Tax adjustment without harming the poorest

Another issue addressed during the meeting was the state of the public accounts. Lula reaffirmed his commitment to fiscal responsibility, but stressed that financial balance cannot occur through the reduction of social policies aimed at the low-income population.

The president said he intends to maintain public investments and seek alternatives to finance infrastructure projects without compromising the sustainability of government accounts.

“The only thing he [the market] has to know is that the poor will not pay the bill. We will not take the poor people to any sacrifice,” he said.

Lula also advocated hiring funding for works that contribute directly to national development, such as highways, railways, airports and bridges.

According to the president, indebtedness can be justified when resources are used in the construction of public assets and there is capacity to pay.

Challenge for the coming years

For Lula, the combination of productive investments, sustainable exploitation of recursos naturais, fiscal responsibility and social protection represents an opportunity to boost the Brazilian economy.

The goal announced by the president, however, represents a significant challenge, since the classification of a country as developed involves factors such as per capita income, productivity, infrastructure, education, health and quality of life.

The government is committed to expanding the economy and taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the energy transition to accelerate this process in the next four years.
