Public Safety in Ponta Grossa Advances with Technology and Integration by Guilherme Rangel
Public safety in PG is advancing with technology, integration of forces, new investments and actions aimed at reducing crime.
Few areas of public administration influence the quality of life of the population as much as public safety. It is in the municipalities that the citizen hopes to find safe streets, organized traffic and the Public Power present, able to protect people, preserve the heritage and guarantee tranquility to families. Given the increasing complexity of crime in recent years, strengthening local action has become a necessity and a priority.
In this context, the municipalization of security actions gained prominence, boosting the strengthening of municipal civil guards and the rapprochement between security forces and the community. It is a model consolidated in several cities of the world, in which agents who know the local reality act more efficiently both in the prevention and in the confrontation of crime.
Throughout my career as a police officer and public manager, I had the opportunity to learn about successful national and international experiences. In all of them, three pillars stand out as indispensable for the construction of an efficient public policy: investment, technology and integration between institutions.
It is precisely in this scenario that Ponta Grossa has been consolidating itself as a state reference. Projects such as the Muralha Digital represent a real window into the future of citizen protection, combining artificial intelligence, intelligent monitoring and real-time information sharing to expand the responsiveness of security forces.
At the same time, we strengthened the structure of the Municipal Guard and the Traffic Superintendence, which today have a significantly larger and more capable staff, renewed vehicles, modern equipment and drones used in strategic operations. The integrated work through the Office of Integrated Municipal Management (GGIM) consolidated a coordinated action among the various bodies responsible for public safety, enhancing results and optimizing resources.
The reflections of this strategy, implemented throughout the management of the Prefeita Elizabeth Schmidt, are evident. The municipality surpassed all previous administrations in hiring and expanding the workforce on the streets. The operational results demonstrate this evolution: while between 2013 and 2020 the Municipal Guard seized approximately 150 kilograms of drugs, in the first months of 2025 alone this volume has already exceeded 360 kilograms.
In road safety, the advances are also significant. The investment in signalling, supervision and prevention allowed to transform actions previously punctual in a permanent policy aimed at the construction of a safer transit for all. In 2025 alone, more than 260 drivers were arrested for drunk driving, highlighting the Municipality’s commitment to the preservation of life.
When we observe a broader period, the indicators confirm the effectiveness of this model. The integrated action of the security forces contributed to a reduction of more than 50% in the rates of homicides and thefts, including thefts of vehicles, between the years 2023 and 2025.
These results demonstrate that planning, continuous investment, technological innovation and institutional integration are capable of transforming public security into an increasingly efficient and population-friendly policy. Just as Ponta Grossa has evolved from the paths of troopers to the tracks of innovation, its security policy also points to the future, showing that the right to security may no longer be just an expectation to become a concrete reality for the entire community.
