The assembly tells the trajectory of a couple who left Europe after World War II and built a new life in Ponta Grossa. He was of Jewish origin and lost his family in the Holocaust. She acted as a nurse during the conflict. The two met in the post-war period and arrived in Brazil bringing four suitcases, one of them only with books.

In an interview with BnT News, the author and coordinator of the montage, Daniel, revealed the personal connection with the plot: the protagonists are their parents. “When I tell the story of a man and a woman, it’s the story of my father and my mother,” he said.

The proposal, according to him, is to preserve the memory of the couple and show how people marked by violence and loss managed to reconstruct their own trajectory. In Ponta Grossa, the two opened a small store, bonded with residents and formed a family.

The knowledge of languages also helped in the approach with immigrants from other cities of the Campos Gerais, such as Castro and Carambeí. According to Daniel’s account, the mother spoke seven languages and the father six.

Family Memories on Stage

The assembly brings together students of a theatre course linked to the Pro-Rectorate of Extension and the Center of Art and Culture of the State University of Ponta Grossa (UEPG). The cast is made up of beginner actors, including 15-year-olds, with weekly rehearsals of an hour and a half.

The musical design is by Sabrina Carneiro and includes a song of Jewish origin that Daniel's father used to sing. Objects preserved by the family, such as the first shoe and clothing used by the author as a baby, also integrate the proposal of the show.

"It's a show that at the same time has a playful side, has a side of memory, has a side of longing, but has a side of showing that the sun still shines," he said. For Daniel, bringing this story to the public also helps to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive and stimulate reflection on the present.
