The use of a light signal to thank in traffic can gain specific rules in the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). The Bill No. 2729/2026, presented by the deputy Amom Mandel (Republicans-AM), proposes to regulate an auxiliary light signage of courtesy among drivers. The measure is not yet law and awaits an opinion in the Committee on Transportation of the Chamber of Deputies

The proposal provides for the brief activation of a device intended to demonstrate gratitude, transmit a preventive communication or express kindness in public roads. The signalling would not grant priority to the driver or replace the mandatory equipment of the vehicle.

How the courtesy light would work

According to the text presented, the use of the device would be optional and temporary. The driver could not keep the light on continuously or use it ostensibly.

The signage would also need to respect the safety of other road users. This means that the equipment could not cause glare, distract other drivers or impair the identification of the required lights of the car.

Another restriction foreseen is the prohibition of colors, frequencies and light patterns reserved for official vehicles, emergency, surveillance or public safety. The intention is to prevent a courtesy demonstration from being confused with a request for the passage of ambulances or vehicles.

Contran would define the technical details

If the project is approved, it would be up to the National Transit Council (Contran) to establish the specifications of the equipment. The regulation shall deal with luminous intensity, permissible colours, location, installation, maximum duration of the drive and approval requirements.

Therefore, it is not yet possible to state which device could be used or how its installation would be made. The proposal should also not be interpreted as an immediate authorization to adapt vehicles or use any light as a sign of thanks.

In the justification, the author argues that the regulation can encourage cordiality between drivers and establish parameters for a form of communication that needs to preserve road safety.

The proposal still needs approval

In the Chamber, the project will be analyzed by the committees of Transportation and Constitution and Justice and Citizenship, in a conclusive character. The deadline for submitting amendments ended on Tuesday (13), with no suggestions for amendments. The designated rapporteur is Mrs Lêda Borges (Republicanos-GO).

To become law, the proposal still needs to complete proceedings in Congress and go through the presidential sanction stage. The text provides for entry into force 180 days after official publication, if approved.
