A collision between two high-speed trains in Spain left at least 30 people dead and several injured on Wednesday morning. The accident occurred near Urda, in the province of Toledo, a central region of the country, about 150 kilometers from the capital, Madrid.

According to the regional authorities of Castilla-La Mancha, the number of deaths was updated after an initial balance pointing to ten fatalities. Emergency teams continue to work on the site, and there is a possibility that the death toll will increase in the coming hours.

How the accident happened

The collision took place on a high-speed railway connecting Madrid to the city of Seville in southern Spain. The accident involved compositions of the companies Renfe, a Spanish public railway operator, and Iryo, a private company.

According to information released by the Spanish press, a Renfe train would have hit the back of a composition of Iryo that was stopped on the tracks. With the force of the impact, two wagons left the tracks, leaving a scenario of destruction.

Images released by local broadcasters show twisted metal structures, parts of the wagons destroyed and debris scattered near the railway.

The circumstances that caused the collision have not yet been officially clarified.

Rescue teams have been mobilized.

Firefighters, health professionals and specialized units were mobilized to attend the passengers affected by the accident.

The emergency operation involved helicopters and mobile intensive care units. The rescuers work in the care of the wounded and in the evaluation of the condition of the damaged wagons.

The company Adif, responsible for the administration of the railway infrastructure of Spain, confirmed the interruption of the circulation of trains on the high-speed line between Madrid and the Andalusian region.

At the time of the first releases, there was no confirmed forecast for the standardization of services.

The Spanish government regrets the tragedy

The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, expressed solidarity with the victims and the families affected by the accident.

Given the gravity of the situation, Sánchez cancelled public appointments scheduled for Wednesday. Spanish political parties have also suspended electoral campaign activities.

Authorities are monitoring the rescue work and determining the circumstances that led to the collision.

Second serious accident in less than a year

The new railway tragedy comes about nine months after another major accident in Spain.

In January 2026, a collision involving high-speed trains near Adamuz in the province of Cordoba left 46 dead.

At the time, the disaster provoked questions about the safety of the Spanish railway system and the maintenance of high-speed lines.

With the new accident, the safety of railway operations returns to the center of attention in the country. The causes of the collision on Wednesday still depend on investigation.
