Derrite rejects supporting Alcolumbre and calls for opposition unity
The elected senator from São Paulo, Derrite, publicly declared he will not vote for Davi Alcolumbre for Senate president. He advocates for the opposition to unite around a single conservative candidate. Senator Damares Alves also criticized negotiations involving amnesty and political support.

The senator elected by São Paulo, Derrite, announced on Wednesday that he will not support the re-election of Davi Alcolumbre to the presidency of the Senate. The statement was made on social media and reinforces the division between center-right parties and opposition in the February 2027 dispute over the House of Representatives. Derrite has advocated that opposition senators articulate around a single candidate to face Alcolumbre.
"I have declared countless times during the campaign and I come here to publicly declare to the more than 13 million voters here from the state of São Paulo who voted for me: I will not vote for Davi Alcolumbre for the presidency of the Senate," Derrite said. The speech marks a firm position against the current president of the Senate, who seeks another term.
Opposition seeks single candidate
Derite considers the names of Senators Rogério Marinho (PL-RN) and Tereza Cristina (PP-MS) to be viable to lead the opposition squad. The elected parliamentarian stated that he intends to vote for a representative of the conservative camp and criticized Alcolumbre's performance in the face of impeachment requests from ministers of the Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF).
In Derrite’s assessment, the Senate must exercise its constitutional prerogatives and choose a president committed to the guidelines advocated by the opposition. The federation between PP and União Brasil will have 12 senators in the next legislature, which may influence the balance of forces in the dispute.
Damares rejects exchange of amnesty for support
Senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF) also ruled out supporting Alcolumbre’s re-election in exchange for an eventual amnesty to former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) or those convicted of the January 8, 2023, acts. In a statement to Folha de S.Paulo, Damares criticized the possibility of negotiating the situation of convicts in exchange for political support to the current president of the Senate.
“I don’t think we have an agreement to trade lives for power. It becomes disgusting,” he said. The senator said she will continue to defend the amnesty for those convicted of the January 8 acts, as well as opening impeachment proceedings against ministers of the STF and parliamentary committees of inquiry (CPIs).
Priority guidelines of the opposition
“We will work for the amnesty of all political prisoners, the impeachment of some ministers of the Supreme Court, CPMIs and CPIs such as Banco Master, Roberta Luchsinger, Correios,” Damares said. The list of priorities includes investigations on sensitive issues and accountability of judicial authorities.
In another statement, Damares said the opposition does not intend to negotiate Bolsonaro’s situation in exchange for political space. “No, no one will negotiate the life of the President of the Republic for power, no. We will fight for what is our right, amnesty and impeachment, without negotiating anyone’s life,” he said.
Impact of the Senate Dispute
The statements of Derrite and Damares indicate a scenario of resistance to the re-election of Alcolumbre, who has not yet officially confirmed his candidacy. The articulation of the opposition around a single name can fragment support for the current president, especially among right-wing and center-right senators.
The federation PP-União Brasil, with 12 senators, will be a relevant bloc in the next legislature. The position of Tereza Cristina, cited by Derrite as a possible candidate, has not yet been officialized. The impasse over amnesty and impeachment is expected to dominate the debates in the coming months.
The Boca no Trombone Portal will continue to monitor the unfolding of this dispute and will bring new information as it becomes available.
