A drone attack has set fire to a data center of Yandex, a technology company known as the “Russian Google,” in the city of Sasovo, Russia. The incident occurred during the night and led to the suspension of activities in the complex. Images posted on social media show a large fire at the site, which Russian agencies say is considered important for the country’s industrial-military complex.

In a press release, Yandex said: “An incident at Sasovo’s data center affected part of its infrastructure. The situation at the site is currently under control and there have been no casualties. The team is dealing with the consequences of the incident and restoring the affected services.” The company did not specify the extent of the damage or the time limit for the normalisation of the services.

Ukraine does not claim attack

So far, Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the attack and has not spoken out about the case. The silence of the Ukrainian authorities leaves open the authorship of the action, which takes place amid the war between the two countries, which began in February 2022. The international community has been seeking a ceasefire, but without significant progress.

The attack on economic infrastructure such as data centers, refineries and energy facilities has become a feature of the conflict in recent years. In this year of 2026, when the war completed four years, both sides intensified this type of action, widening the impact on the population and the economy.

Users report instability

On social media, users reported problems on Yandex’s platform, such as instability and off-air systems. The reports coincide with the time of the fire in the data center, suggesting that the company’s services were affected by the incident. Yandex did not say which specific services were impacted, but said the team is working to restore them.

Sasovo’s data center is one of Yandex’s top in Russia, hosting servers that support search, email, cloud storage and other digital products. Disruption of these services can affect millions of users at home and abroad.

Context of War

The war between Russia and Ukraine began in February 2022, after Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops to invade Ukrainian territory. Since then, the conflict has caused thousands of deaths and displacements, as well as significant damage to the infrastructure of both countries. The international community has been striving for a ceasefire, but negotiations have not progressed.

In recent years, attacks on economic infrastructure have become a recurring tactic, with the aim of weakening the ability of the adversary. Data centers, because of their strategic importance for communications and military operations, have become potential targets. The Sasovo incident reinforces this trend and raises concerns about the safety of civilian facilities in conflict zones.

Yandex did not comment on whether the data center housed sensitive data or whether the attack was military-motivated. The company has merely reported that the situation is under control and that there have been no casualties. The Russian authorities have also not officially commented on the case so far.

The fire in Sasovo is another episode in a war that has lasted for four years and continues to affect the lives of millions of people. As the international community seeks a diplomatic solution, the local population faces the consequences of a conflict that seems far from over.
