Debt and financial well-being are directly linked to the ability of families to reorganize accounts, negotiate commitments and regain control over their own money. For financial planner Vívian Rodrigues Magalhães, even those who have been living with debt for a long time can change this reality, as long as they can build a plan and seek support.

The expert spoke with the BnT Portal during the 11th National Meeting with Journalists and Opinion Trainers of Sicredi, held in Rio Grande do Sul. The BnT participates in the programming representing Ponta Grossa and Campos Gerais, following the special coverage started this week.

According to Vivian, one of the first steps for those in debt is to understand that change depends on a combination of attitudes.

“Unfortunately, there is no one who will solve this for you. We need, somehow, to draw a plan to get out of this situation and go to a situation a little more comfortable, with a little more financial well-being,” he said.

Renegotiating debt is only part of the way

In the financial planner’s assessment, the debt confrontation should not be restricted to the renegotiation of a specific debt.

Searching for financial institutions to review credit conditions may be part of the strategy, but it is also necessary to carefully observe the family’s own financial structure.

“Be it by going after financial institutions that can support us with a credit renegotiation, with some movement of change of this structure of incoming and outgoing, or by looking at the financial photograph itself,” he explained.

The so-called “financial photography” means understanding, in a practical way, how much money goes in every month and where the resources are going.

From this diagnosis, according to Vivian, it is possible to discuss inside the home what expenses can be reduced, what expenses can be eliminated and even what alternatives exist to increase income.

“What you can cut, what you can reduce, what I can earn the most,” he said.

Financial well-being goes beyond not having debts

The concept of financial well-being has taken up increasing space in discussions about financial education. The idea goes beyond simply having money saved or not owning debts.

It involves conditions to pay for daily commitments, face unforeseen events, make decisions with greater security and be able to plan the future without the financial situation becoming a permanent source of concern.

For Vivian, different small changes can produce results over time.

“A set of these actions can, in the short, medium or long term, leave you in a much more comfortable financial situation,” he said.

The specialist also draws attention to an important point: a prolonged debt situation should not be regarded as something definitive.

“The fact that you’ve been in debt for a long time doesn’t make this your reality for the rest of your life. There is always something we can do,” he said.

Getting help is also part of the reorganization.

Another recommendation is not to try to solve more complex financial situations without guidance.

“Seek help nearby,” Vivian summarized.

This help can come from both professionals specialized in financial planning and from the institutions themselves with which there are debts, especially when there is the possibility of renegotiation of payment conditions.

Rather than finding an immediate solution, the goal is to build a structure that allows the person to return to making financial decisions in a planned manner.

BnT attends Sicredi national meeting

The interview is part of the coverage of the BnT Portal at the 11th National Meeting with Journalists and Opinion Formators of Sicredi.

The meeting brings together press professionals and guests from different regions of Brazil for a program that addresses credit cooperativism, education and financial well-being, regional development and the relationship of financial institutions with communities.

The BnT Portal participates representing Ponta Grossa and Campos Gerais and follows the discussions directly at the meeting.

In the first report of the coverage, published on Wednesday (14), the BnT showed how Sicredi’s national strategy of maintaining close relationships with its members is connected to the institution’s expansion process in the Campos Gerais.
