Penhasco, by Renata Régis Florisbelo

The magnificent view. A piece of land that advances over the sea. Cliff, high, steep and picturesque in the narrow entrances, a turn of almost one hundred and eighty degrees and there was the whole slope on edges to be seen. The view followed far away, ocean in and beaches spreading, lands and civilization entwined. At the end of the higher portion, the abysses in the steep coasts in stones and vegetation rale in the aridity of the slope.
Perhaps a mermaid's song or the wind's whisper or even a whisper of someone through time. A glimpse of sunshine shining on the scene. Some let themselves be seduced by the call to the edge of the cliff. The insufficient warnings of danger, ignored by the ears that heeded the insane called insistents.
And the mermaids in their melodious singing make more victims. A chill in those who reach the edge and do not let themselves be led by the mesmerizing murmurs. A restlessness in those who feel the desolation of falls and deaths.
