Man who took 13 children hostage in Curitiba allegedly threatened to attack a school in Mallet
Intruder at CMEI São Braz had ties to Mallet and had already expressed intention to attack a school in the municipality in 2025
The CMEI São Braz in Curitiba, who held 13 children hostage on Friday, had a connection with the municipality of Mallet, in the South-Central of Paraná, and already reportedly expressed, in 2025, the intention to attack a school in the city. The man was killed during an intervention by the Special Police Operations Battalion (Bope).
The information was released by CBN Curitiba, which had access to a bulletin of occurrence registered in September 2025 in Mallet. According to the broadcaster, the document mentions that the same man had expressed the intention to carry out an attack against the Nicolau Copernico State College, located in the municipality.
The bulletin was initially related to a report of possible domestic violence involving the man’s mother. According to the information released by CBN, when the police went to the address, mother and son allegedly denied the occurrence of assaults.
Despite the relationship with Mallet, until Friday night the authorities had not publicly disclosed the man's civilian identity.
Invasion leaves 13 children hostage
The case began during the afternoon in the Municipal Center of Educação Infantil São Braz, in the neighborhood of the same name, in Curitiba. The man entered the unit and kept 13 children, aged around 4 and 5, inside a room.
According to the information released by the Military Police, the attacker was carrying a knife and a firearm. It also spread flammable product around the environment and threatened to cause a fire.
Specialized teams from Bope were mobilized and started a negotiation that lasted for hours.
During the incident, according to reports from the authorities reproduced by the press, the man presented disorganized behavior and the teams could not establish clearly what would be the motivation for the invasion.
Military police also said they had identified a history of schizophrenia. Information on the health condition, however, does not establish a causal relationship with the invasion, the motivation of which continues to be investigated.
Bope made an intervention
With the worsening of the situation and the increased risk to children, Bope decided to make a tactical entry into the CMEI.
According to information released after the incident, the man began to act more aggressively and even held one of the children during the intervention. He was hit by police and died at the scene.
The 13 children were taken alive. Five of them were referred for medical evaluation after the rescue. Initial information indicated that there were no serious injuries among the students.
The City of Curitiba mobilized teams to provide medical and psychological care to the children, family and professionals of the unit.
Letter will be analyzed
During the work carried out at CMEI São Braz, the authorities also located a letter that was allegedly left by the invader. The document has been collected and should be part of the investigation into the episode.
The analysis of the material could help the police to clarify the motivation of the invasion and reconstruct the events that preceded the attack.
The report of occurrence located in Mallet must also be considered during the count, especially given the information that, approximately a year before the case in Curitiba, the man already mentioned the possibility of attacking another educational institution.
The full circumstances of the case continue to be investigated.
