Mariene de Castro performed the show 'Cantadeira' at Circo Voador in Rio de Janeiro, originally recorded in Castro Alves, Bahia. With musical direction by Fábio Cunha, the performance featured xotes, baiões and the participation of accordionist Cicinho de Assis.

Mariene de Castro took to the Flying Circus, in Rio de Janeiro, on October 3, 2026, the show 'Cantadeira', reproducing on the stage in Rio the show she recorded in the June period in Castro Alves, municipality of Recôncavo Baiano. The recording, made in a taipa house prepared for audiovisual recording during the Arraiá do Poeta, is still unpublished on the audio and video platforms. At the Flying Circus, the audience was able to check out some shots of the recording projected on the screen throughout the presentation.

With the musical direction of the arranger and multi-instrumentalist Fábio Cunha, the Bahian singer showed a repertoire that exalts the north-stineness and cultural resistance. The lively coloured brewery costume reinforced the popular party atmosphere that guides the show.

Nordestinity in each chord

The opening of the show has already set the tone of the night. Mariene sang the baiano ‘Hora do adeus’, by Luiz Gonzaga and Onildo Almeida, released in 1974, and took the opportunity to give a message: ‘The symphony has not yet disaffinated / My voice, you notice me singing, / That is the same voice as when my reign began’. The presence of the accordion, by the way, is essential in 'Cantadeira'.

In the show, the instrument is in charge of Gel Barbosa, but, in the carioca presentation, the Bahian accordionist Cicinho de Assis entered the scene in the middle of the show to reinforce the sound.

The first part of the show was dominated by the cadence of the xote. Mariene played "The Nature of Things" by Accioly Neto, a composer from Pernambuco who died in 2000, and also recalled "Remembrance of a Kiss" by the same author. Another highlight was 'Se tu querer', a xote by Xico Bizerra that Elba Ramalho re-recorded on the album 'Balaio de amor', from 2009.

Shots and bayons in the love balloon

The repertoire followed with other xotes, such as 'Caxixi (Bonitinha)', by Roque Ferreira, and 'Preciso de teu sorriso', by João Leocádio da Silva and Enok Dantas, music that was part of the repertoire of Dominguinhos. The sequence gave the first half of the show a somewhat linear tone, but the temperature rose when Mariene revived Caetano Veloso's "Cajuína", with the zabumba well marked in the arrangement.

Then, the singer presented "Beradéro", by Chico César, on abrasive percussion and noise tone, causing a momentary turn of key. The baião 'Anjo querubim', by Petrúcio Amorim, subsequently ratified the dominant romanticism in the love balloon that Mariene brought from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro.

Scenic Force in 'Coconut Breaker'

The only memory of the seminal album 'Abre caminho', from 2004, 'Cantiga de cangaceiro', by Roque Ferreira, prepared the climate for the great moment of the show. Mariene showed all the usual scenic strength — somewhat diluted in the cadence of romantic xotes — by singing 'Quebradeira de coco', also by Roque Ferreira. The performance ended the evening with energy, reaffirming the power of the artist and the richness of the Northeast repertoire.

The show 'Cantadeira' continues as an audiovisual project yet unpublished, but the presentation at the Flying Circus gave the public a sample of what is to come. The source did not detail the release date of the record recorded in Castro Alves.
