'Cyclone monster' may hit Ponta Grossa? Forecast indicates storms and heavy rain
Formation of an extratropical cyclone in southern Brazil increases concern about weather in Paraná; Ponta Grossa has a forecast of heavy rain, gusty winds and possibility of hail

The forecast for the formation of an extratropical cyclone in the South of Brazil puts the Paraná in attention for storms in the coming days. In Ponta Grossa, in Campos Gerais, the effects of the instability can be felt especially between Friday (23) and Sunday (25) of October, with intense rainfall, gusts of wind and possibility of hail.
The phenomenon, informally called a “monster cyclone” in headlines and social media posts, is associated with an area of low atmospheric pressure and the formation of a cold front. Although the term attracts attention, it does not represent an official weather classification.
According to Climatempo, the formation of an extratropical cyclone is expected on Saturday (24), amid a combination of atmospheric conditions that favor storms and high cumulative rainfall in the South of the country.
Can Ponta Grossa be hit by the cyclone?
The answer is yes, mainly by the indirect effects of the weather system. The city is in the area of influence of the instabilities foreseen for the Paraná, but there is no confirmation that the center of the cyclone will pass directly through the municipality.

Inmet issues storm alert for Ponta Grossa
The National Meteorological Institute (Inmet) also issued a yellow storm warning for Ponta Grossa, valid on Thursday (22). The warning points to the possibility of rainfall between 20 and 30 millimeters per hour, or up to 50 millimeters per day, in addition to winds between 40 and 60 km/h and hailfall.
According to the agency, there is a low risk of interruptions in the supply of electricity, damage to plantations, fall of branches and flooding. New notices also cover the following days.
Why can the cyclone cause so much rain?
According to Climatempo, three factors contribute to the instability scenario: the strengthening of an area of low atmospheric pressure, the inflow of hot and humid air from the Amazon and the process of formation of a cold front associated with the extratropical cyclone.
This combination favors the formation of charged clouds and storms in several regions of Paraná. The situation requires attention because the state has already been facing above-average rainfall periods, which can increase the impact of new accumulated on soaked soils and vulnerable areas.
