The recovery of Dom Sérgio Arthur Braschi, bishop emeritus of Ponta Grossa, continues to progress gradually after cancer treatment. In a message addressed to the young people of the Diocese, the religious spoke about the difficulties he still faces, especially in food, and revealed that he is able to regain some of the weight lost.

Known for his pastoral work and closeness to the faithful of the Campos Gerais, Dom Sérgio shared details about his state of health while commenting on the recovery period after the sessions of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

“I am, in fact, now completing a year of that radiation therapy and chemotherapy treatment that I did and I am still in recovery,” she said.

The bishop emeritus stressed that recovery requires patience and courage, especially in the face of the limitations that remain in his routine.

Don Sergio still faces difficulties in feeding

One of the main difficulties reported by the religious is related to food. According to him, it is not yet possible to chew normally, which requires special care with the food consumed.

"I have to eat more liquids and pasty, but I am able to regain some weight and we are also improving," he said.

Dom Sérgio also mentioned changes in hearing and vision, which are part of the difficulties faced in this period.

Despite the limitations, the bishop showed optimism with the advances he has been presenting and stressed the importance of facing the process with patience.

Remember the health history of the bishop emeritus

Dom Sérgio Arthur Braschi has been facing health problems related to a cancer in the throat region since 2021, when he began a treatment that included chemotherapy and immunotherapy sessions.

At the time, the religious had to go through periods of hospitalization, rest and medical follow-up, with adaptations in his agenda of religious activities.

Over the following years, treatment required new care and procedures. In the most recent message, Dom Sérgio reported that he is completing a year of a period of treatment with radiation therapy and chemotherapy, but that the recovery still continues.

Despite being away from the administration of the diocese, the religious continue to follow the pastoral activities and show interest in the actions developed in the communities.

Dom Sérgio took over the Diocese of Ponta Grossa in September 2003 and remained at the head of the institution for more than two decades. In June 2024, Pope Francis accepted his request for resignation by age, making him bishop emeritus. The Diocese is now led by Dom Bruno Elizeu Versari.

Message of Faith and Encouragement to Missionaries

In addition to updating his state of health, Archbishop Sérgio took advantage of the message to demonstrate joy with the growth of missionary activities and with the initiatives developed by the parishes.

The religious recalled the moments in which he participated in meetings with young people, singing and playing the guitar, and stressed that he continues to follow the news of the communities.

"You who met me there with the little guitar, don't you, singing with joy, cheering, you know how happy I am, how I vibrate when I see these news of the missions happening," he said.

Sergio also stressed the importance of the work of missionaries in the evangelization of families.

"The Church is essentially the Gospel, evangelizing, missionary," he said.

During the message, he also mentioned the preparation for the American Missionary Congress, scheduled to take place in Curitiba, bringing together representatives of different countries of the continent.

The bishop emeritus concluded his demonstration with words of encouragement, thanks and a blessing to the faithful.

The new update on the recovery of Archbishop Sérgio Arthur represents another moment of contact of the religious with the Catholic community of Ponta Grossa and the Campos Gerais, which followed his trajectory at the head of the Diocese and the challenges faced during the treatment of health.
