The Paraná faces a new threat of storms this first week of November. After the sequencing of storms that caused destruction in Maringá, Marquinho and other municipalities, the formation of an extratropical cyclone in Southern Brazil may intensify rainfall and provoke new episodes of wind and hail as of Tuesday (3).

According to Meteored, the first cyclone is expected to gain strength on Wednesday, associated with the advance of a cold front. The system may cause instability in different regions of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, with reflections also in the Southeast and Midwest of the country.

The warning comes at a sensitive time for the state. Between Sunday (1st) and Monday (2), storms hit 21 municipalities in Paraná, leaving thousands of residents harmed and hundreds of homes damaged.

Paraná may face new storms between Wednesday and Thursday

Weather conditions should become more unstable with the approach of the extratropical cyclone and the displacement of a cold front through the territory of Paraná.

The forecast indicates that the system will gain organization during Wednesday (4), initially with higher concentration of rainfall in Rio Grande do Sul. As of the afternoon, the instability is expected to advance towards Santa Catarina and Paraná, with the possibility of intensifying throughout Thursday (5).

The combination of heat, high humidity and changes in wind circulation creates conditions conducive to the formation of potentially severe storms.

Among the main risks are heavy rains in a short period of time, intense gusts of wind, electric shocks and hailfall. There is also the possibility of flooding, flooding and damage to the electrical network.

Ponta Grossa and Campos Gerais need to keep up with alerts

In Ponta Grossa and in other municipalities of Campos Gerais, the recommendation is to follow the weather updates, especially in the face of the possibility of advancement of areas of instability by Paraná.

The region may experience changes in weather conditions with the passage of the cold front. However, the intensity of the rains and winds will depend on the displacement and organization of the atmospheric system.

The Defesa Civil guides the population to redouble care during storms, avoiding areas subject to flooding and places close to trees, poles and structures that may be damaged by wind.

Destruction in Maringá and Marquinho leaves thousands of people affected

The thunderstorms of early November have already provoked significant consequences on the Paraná.

According to the balance sheet of Defesa Civil released on Monday (2), 21 municipalities recorded occurrences related to the storms. The numbers point to:

4,067 people affected;

28 displaced residents;

456 homes damaged;

A completely destroyed residence.

Maringá, in the Northwest region, was one of the most affected cities. The strong winds knocked down trees, shredded buildings and caused damage in different parts of the municipality. The situation led the City Council to decree a state of public calamity.

The storm also hit the Fire Department headquarters, causing damage to the unit’s administrative structure and vehicles. Despite the damage, there was no record of wounded military personnel at the site.

Supercell may have caused destructive storm

The violence of the storm in Maringá raised the possibility of the occurrence of a supercell, a meteorological phenomenon characterized by an upward air current with persistent rotating movement.

This type of storm can produce extremely strong gusts, large hail, and, under certain conditions, tornadoes.

The supercell hypothesis was pointed out by the Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar), but it does not mean that a tornado has occurred.

In other municipalities, the force of the wind also caught attention. In Altônia, in the northwest of Paraná, gusts of 109.1 km/h were recorded, according to weather data released after the storms.

Hail damaged hundreds of houses in Marquinho

Another municipality strongly affected was Marquinho, in the Central-South region of Paraná.

The storm on Sunday caused flashes in homes, schools, health facilities and commercial establishments. The hail also caused damage to residents of rural communities.

According to the initial survey of Defesa Civil, 1,080 people were affected and at least 270 homes suffered damage.

Teams of the Fire Department were mobilized to assist in the care of families, while the City organized the distribution of tarps for emergency protection of the affected properties.

Forecast indicates more instability during the week

In addition to the first cyclone scheduled for Wednesday (4), Meteored points to the possibility of the formation of a second cyclone system next Saturday (7).

The action of these phenomena, in conjunction with cold fronts, may keep the weather unstable in different Brazilian regions.

The intensity of the storms can vary according to the trajectory of the systems, so the weather warnings need to be followed daily.

In case of emergency, the population can trigger the Defesa Civil by phone 199 or the Fire Department by 193.
