Can expired CNH be used until December 9? See who is eligible for extension
Measure from Contran applies to documents with expiration between June 5 and December 8, 2026; renewal is still required
Drivers from Ponta Grossa and across the country must check the expiration date of the National License (CNH). A deliberation of the National Transit Council (Contran) extended until December 9, 2026, the validity of the CNHs and the Moped Driving Authorizations (ACC) that expire between June 5 and December 8 of this year. The measure is exceptional and does not cover overdue documents outside of that range.
The driver included in the extension does not need to issue another CNH or do a procedure to register the new validity. After December 9, you will have 30 days to renew the document, as deliberated. The extension of the period also does not return the right to drive to those with the license suspended or broken.
Longer term rekindles debate on safety
The extension takes place amid a discussion about the evaluation of drivers. In a text published on Thursday (24), the Transit Portal informs, based on data attributed to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), that the federal highways registered 42,322 accidents, 3,516 deaths and 48,611 injuries between January and July 2026. The publication brings together opinions of representatives of the Association of Transit Clinics of Minas Gerais (Actrans), who defend the importance of evaluations in the renewal of the NHC.
These figures do not show that the extension caused accidents, nor do they allow us to conclude how many occurrences would be avoided by the renewal of the document. The causes of collisions are diverse, and the data cited deal with accidents prior to the new deliberation, published in September.

For the driver, the practical guideline is to check the date printed on the CNH and plan the renewal within the applicable deadline. The extension of validity does not eliminate the assessments required to renew the licence. Those who prefer can also start the process before December.
