Children hostages at CMEI São Braz are rescued by BOPE in Curitiba after three hours of negotiation; five were taken for medical evaluation

The children held hostage at CMEI São Braz, in Curitiba, were rescued by the Military Police of Paraná (PMPR) on the afternoon of Friday (9), after approximately three hours of negotiation with a man who invaded the teaching unit. A total of 13 children, aged between 4 and 5, were released during an intervention by the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE).
Five children were referred for medical evaluation after the occurrence. According to the information released by the authorities, one of them had visible injuries to the face.
The man entered the CMEI armed.
According to PMPR, the man broke into the Municipal Center of Educação Infantil São Braz carrying a knife, a simulacrum of firearm and flammable material.
The Military Police was activated by the 190 telephone and mobilized teams of the 12th Military Police Battalion, the BOPE and the Aviation Command (COMAV).
The CMEI was isolated to ensure the safety of the school community and allow specialized teams to conduct the negotiation.
During the call, police tried to convince the suspect to release the children. However, according to PMPR, the situation worsened when he began to demonstrate aggressive behavior and some children began to be hurt.
Authorities also received information that flammable material had been spread inside the room and that there was a fire threat.
BOPE decided to intervene
According to PMPR Special Missions Commander Colonel Alexandre Lopes Dias, the increased risk to children led the teams to decide to enter the site.
“When we realized that the children began to get at a higher level of stress and that he started to attack them, we opted for tactical entry to avoid a greater evil. We were able to neutralize this person and rescue the 13 children, who were referred to the medical and fire departments,” he said.
The intervention was carried out by the BOPE Special Operations Company after the police identified an opportunity to access the environment.
During the action, according to the Military Police, the suspect tried to reach one of the children and was eventually neutralized by the police team.
The children taken hostage at the CMEI São Braz were taken out of the room and handed over to the medical and emergency teams waiting outside.
Five children underwent medical evaluation
Of the 13 children rescued, five were sent for evaluation to a health unit, some of them also at the request of the responsible.
One of the victims had apparent injuries to the face. The other children received assistance from the emergency teams mobilized for the occurrence.
The PMPR also highlighted the performance of the professionals of CMEI São Braz. The management and teachers managed to remove other children from the unit during the incident, preventing more people from being exposed to the risk situation.
Participated in the operation teams of the Emergency Mobile Service (Samu), Paraná Military Fire Department, Municipal Guard of Curitiba, Civil Police of Paraná and other municipal and state bodies.
