The second round of the 2026 elections takes place on Sunday, October 25. Voters from all over the country return to the polls to decide who will be the next President of the Republic and, in some states, the next governor. The vote takes place from 8 am to 5 pm, during the time of Brasília.

The first round was held on October 4, when Brazilians elected presidents, governors, senators and federal, state and district deputies. Since no candidate for president or governor has achieved more than half of the valid votes in all disputes, a new round of voting is required.

Understand why there is a second round

The second round occurs when no candidate for President of the Republic or the governor gets more than half of the valid votes in the first round, excluding white and null votes. In this situation, the two most voted candidates contest a new vote.

The person who receives the most valid votes in the second round is elected. The rule does not apply to senator and deputy positions. In these cases, the election is defined in the first round.

Date follows electoral calendar

The second round of elections is scheduled for October 25, 2026. The date follows the electoral calendar, which provides for the vote on the last Sunday of October. Voters will have the opportunity to confirm or change their initial choice.

For the positions in which there was a second round, the dispute is concentrated between the two most voted candidates in the first round. The counting of votes begins shortly after the end of the vote at 5 p.m.

How the voting works

The vote will be held throughout the country, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., by Brasilia time. Voters must attend the same polling stations as in the first round, bearing an official document with a photo and a voter’s title.

In states with different time zones, the local time is adjusted to coincide with that of Brasilia. The Justiça Eleitoral recommends that voters check their polling place in advance and avoid leaving for the last minute.

What's at stake

In the second round, voters decide who will hold the Presidency of the Republic for the next four years. In some states, a new governor will also be appointed. The election is final and there will be no re-voting for these positions.

The candidates who compete in the second round are the same ones who got the two largest votes in the first round. The electoral campaign continues until the eve of the vote, with debates, rallies and electoral propaganda.

Importance of Conscious Voting

Voting is compulsory for those over 18 and optional for young people aged 16 and 17, over 70 and illiterate. Those who did not vote in the first round and did not justify the absence can vote normally in the second round, provided that they are in a regular situation with the Justiça Eleitoral.

To answer questions about the electoral situation, the elector can access the website of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) or the e-Title application. The regularization of pending votes must be done before the day of the vote.

Next steps

After the vote, the votes are counted electronically and the results are published in real time by TSE. The diplomacy of the elected ones takes place until the end of the year, and the inauguration is scheduled for January 1, 2027.

The Boca no Trombone Portal will continue to monitor the coverage of the elections and will bring all information about the vote and the results. Keep an eye on our upcoming publications.
