SUS expands vaccine coverage for Pneumo 20 to those over 85 years old

Elderly people aged 85 years or older can already be vaccinated with pneumococcal 20 by the Unified Health System (SUS). The immunizer began to be distributed this month by the Ministry of Health and the goal is to vaccinate at least 90% of the target public.

Pneumococcal 20-valent conjugate (pneumo 20) protects against 20 serotypes of the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, which causes infections such as pneumonia and meningitis. These infections are usually more severe in the elderly, because of the natural aging process of the immune system.

According to the Ministry of Health, in 2025, the rate of hospitalizations for pneumonia in people over 80 years was 2,902.7 per 100,000. The mortality rate was 743.1 per 100,000.

Vaccination in children

In June this year, SUS had already incorporated pneumo 20 into the National Vaccination Calendar for children under the age of 5. Since then, more than 1 million children have been immunized.
