An entire family lost their lives in a serious accident on Sunday night on BR-373 in Candoi, in the south-central region of Paraná. The frontal collision between a car and a truck killed five people: father, mother and three children, including twin babies as young as nine months old.

The accident happened around 10 p.m., at the 413 kilometer highway. According to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the vehicle in which the family was, with plates of Carambeí, followed Foz do Jordão, while the truck, located in Candoi, was travelling in the opposite direction.

The victims were identified as Ronaldo Turok, 29, Camila Prado de Almeida, 25, Isis Almeida de Oliveira, six, and twins Anthony Prado Turok and Matteo Prado Turok, nine months old.

Family did not resist the injuries.

The violence of the crash caused the death of three occupants of the car still on the highway. The mother and two of the children did not resist the injuries before arriving at the hospital.

The father and one of the babies received assistance from the relief teams and were referred to a hospital unit. Despite the efforts to save the victims, both also died.

The tragedy mobilized emergency teams and authorities responsible for attending to the occurrence and determining the circumstances of the collision.

Driver was drunk and drove without a license

During the service of the accident, the police found that the person responsible for driving the truck had left the site before the arrival of the PRF teams.

The 18-year-old left behind a 54-year-old passenger, identified as his uncle, who suffered minor injuries and needed to be referred for medical attention.

Officers subsequently received information that the driver had sought assistance at a hospital in Candoi. Upon arriving at the unit, the police located the driver and carried out the inspection procedures.

The breathalyzer test recorded 0.54 milligrams of alcohol per liter of expelled air, a result that configures the crime of drunkenness at the wheel. It was also found that the young man did not have a National License (CNH).

The young man was arrested and sent to the police.

After receiving medical discharge, the driver was arrested for the crimes of drunkenness at the wheel, driving without a license generating danger of damage and escape from the site of the accident.

He was referred to the Civil Police of Guarapuava, where the occurrence was recorded for legal procedures.

The circumstances that led to the frontal collision will still be clarified through investigation and expert surveys.

The accident on BR-373 left five fatalities of the same family and again drew attention to the risks of the combination of alcohol consumption and driving on Brazilian highways.
