Old woman falls for fake lawyer scam, loses nearly R$2 million and gang is indicted in PR
According to the indictment, the suspects would have deceived the 80-year-old woman, posing as lawyers and false representatives.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Paraná, through the 4th Attorney General’s Office for Criminal Prevention and Prosecution in Curitiba, has filed a criminal complaint against 15 people involved in a scam for electronic fraud, popularly known as the “fake lawyer’s blow.”
According to the complaint, the investigators allegedly deceived an 80-year-old victim by posing as lawyers and false representatives of the legal sector of Banco Central of Brazil and the Federal Economic Fund. In order to allegedly release a court credit of R$ 7 million, referring to the deceased husband of the victim, the criminals demanded the advance payment of false procedural costs. Induced to error through video calls and messages on WhatsApp, the elderly woman made several bank transfers, accumulating a loss of R$ 1,971,826,00.

The investigations showed that the 15 defendants participated in the scheme by ceding their personal bank accounts for the receipt and rapid spraying of illicit funds on multiple accounts and payment institutions, with the aim of making it difficult to trace the money. The MPPR requested the conversion of the temporary detention of all those denounced to pretrial detention, justifying the measure by the severity of the money laundering, by the interstate action of the group and to guarantee public order.
The Prosecutor's Office also requested the maintenance of all the patrimonial insurance measures already deferred, seeking to ensure the repair of the property damage caused to the victim. In addition, a new autonomous police investigation was requested at the Estelionato Police Station to identify the intellectual authors of the coup, who had direct contact with the elderly woman.
The repression of this criminal modality occurs at a time of alert for the institution. Recently, representatives of the 4th Prosecutor’s Office for Prevention and Criminal Prosecution of Curitiba met with the Brazilian Bar Association – Section of the Paraná (OAB-PR) to discuss the accelerated growth of this type of coup in the state. The practice has generated great concern by involving the appropriation of real data from lawsuits, lawyers and magistrates to give appearance of legality to fraud.
