Trump Announces Closure of Kennedy Center for Security

Donald Trump stated on Tuesday (15) that the Kennedy Center board decided to close the doors due to security reasons. The reform will only take place if the institution is renamed as 'Trump-Kennedy Center'. The decision comes after a federal judge blocked the name change without Congressional approval.

The president of the Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, announced on Tuesday that the Kennedy Center’s board has almost unanimously decided to close the doors of the cultural institution for security reasons. In a post on the social network Truth Social, Trump said that the renovation and reconstruction of the building will only begin if the site is renamed “Trump-Kennedy Center.” The move comes on the same day that a federal judge blocked the name change without congressional approval.

Judicial decision bar name change

Earlier on Tuesday, federal Judge Christopher R. Cooper ruled that the Kennedy Center could not be renamed Trump without Congressional approval. The decision represents an immediate obstacle to the president’s plans, who had already included his name on the front sign in December 2025, according to Reuters’ photographic record. Currently, the sign is covered.

Despite the court order, Trump conditioned the start of the works to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on the name approved by the council. “The closure will occur immediately; however, reform and reconstruction — a large and complex work — cannot begin until the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals issues a decision on the name approved by the Council,” he wrote.

Council nominated by Trump

The council of the cultural institution, one of the most important in Washington, is mostly made up of nominations from Trump himself. This composition explains the almost unanimous approval of the proposed closure and the inclusion of the presidential name. The source did not detail how many members voted for or against.

Recently, the board presented several options to include Trump’s name in the facility. Among the inscriptions suggested were “Renewal and donation fund supervised by President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Kennedy Center Fund” and “With gratitude for the support of President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Kennedy Center Fund. None of the options have been officially adopted so far.

Interventions in the US capital

The inclusion of Trump’s name in the Kennedy Center is one of several major interventions that the president plans to make in Washington in his second term. The Republican has already begun the construction of a large ballroom in the East Wing of Casa Branca, which forced the partial demolition of the complex. In addition, it has plans to erect a large Arc de Triomphe in the capital.

These projects have led critics to compare Washington to Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, known for monuments that evoke the cult of personality of current and past dictators. The comparison reflects the discomfort of part of public opinion with the personalization of public spaces in honor of a leader in exercise.

Cultural impact and next steps

The Kennedy Center is one of the Estados Unidos’s premier performing arts venues, hosting theatre, dance, music and opera performances. The immediate closure interrupts the cultural programming and affects artists, employees and the public. The source did not detail deadlines for reopening or alternatives to events already scheduled.

The final decision on the name will depend on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, which has not yet ruled. Meanwhile, the building remains closed and the sign covered, symbolizing the impasse between the Executive and the Judiciary. The cultural community is following with apprehension the developments, which may redefine the role of artistic institutions in the American capital.

The case is still under development and new information is expected in the coming days. Follow the Boca no Trombone for updates on this and other international issues.
