Debate of Globo: see who confirmed attendance
The Globo presidential debate on Thursday (30) will feature Flávio Bolsonaro and Romeu Zema, but not Lula. The absence of the president was confirmed by the PT campaign, while allies of Flávio disagree on his participation.
The presidential debate promoted by TV Globo on Thursday night has already part of its participants defined. Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) and Romeu Zema (New) confirmed attendance, while President Lula (PT) decided not to attend. The meeting begins at 21:30, just after the Jornal Nacional, and will be broadcast by TV Globo, GloboNews and G1.
The absence of Lula, announced by the petist campaign, eliminates the possibility of a direct confrontation with Flavio in the last debate televised before the first round. Even so, the candidate of the PL maintains the intention to participate, despite internal differences between its allies.
Who will be in the Globe studio
Initially, the station had invited four candidates: Lula, Flávio Bolsonaro, Cury and Caiado. The criterion considered the representation of parties or federations in Congress. With the decision of the President of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Kassio Nunes Marques, which authorized candidates of the Novo to participate in the debates, Zema was also included in the confrontation.
With Lula’s decision not to participate and the inclusion of Zema, the composition planned for the debate is: Flávio Bolsonaro, Romeu Zema, Cury and Caiado. The chair intended for the participant who does not attend will be kept in the studio and identified with the candidate's name. The regulation provides that present candidates may ask questions to an absent candidate.
Flavio confirms the challenge Lula
Flavio confirmed on Sunday (27) that he would participate in the Globo debate and made a direct challenge to the president. “We’re going to the balloon debate. It's confirmed here. He (Lula) fights. I want to go there so I can debate with him. So I’m calling Lula for the debate. ‘Lula, I want you in the debate at Globo. Come debate with me because I will rub the truth in your face.”
Even in the absence of Lula, members of the PL campaign confirmed to the People’s Gazette that Flavio maintains the intention to participate in the meeting. The debate will be the last opportunity for the candidates to be exposed in a televised confrontation ahead of Sunday’s vote (4).
Divergence between Flavius' allies
The decision of Flavius, however, opposed part of his allies. Some argued that the candidate would not appear if Lula was also absent. The assessment of this group was that without the president, Flavio could become the main target of the other candidates.
Despite internal pressure, the PL candidate chose to keep participating. The strategy can be risky, but it also ensures visibility at a decisive moment of the campaign, a few days before the vote.
Why Lula decided not to go
On Wednesday (30), the PT campaign confirmed that Lula decided not to attend the Globo debate. According to a survey released by the UOL, the campaign assessed the risk of the president becoming a target of the other candidates during the program.
With the absence, there will be no direct confrontation between Lula and Flavio in the last presidential debate before the first round. Lula’s decision follows a tendency to avoid exposure in debates when there is no strategic need, prioritizing other campaign formats.
Format of the debate and transmission
The debate will be divided into four blocks, two with drawn themes and two with free themes. The dynamics allow candidates to explore both predefined subjects and questions of their choice, increasing the unpredictability of confrontation.
The cross-platform broadcast by TV Globo, GloboNews and G1 expands the scope of the event, allowing voters from all over the country to follow the candidates’ proposals. For the undecided, it is an opportunity to compare positions before going to the polls.
What to expect from the last debate
With Lula’s absence, the debate takes on different contours. Flávio Bolsonaro, as the main name of the opposition, should focus the attention and possibly the attacks of the other candidates. Zema, newly included, will have the chance to perform to a wider audience.
